Server Consolidation [closed]

We have an Openstack cluster with 5 large (64 cores, 256GB) servers and a Ceph cluster with four older servers. We are running out of cooling capacity in our modest IT room, so we are always looking for ways to consolidate services onto fewer machines. One possible idea was to load up our Openstack servers with hard drives and run Ceph OSDs on each of them, while maintaining the existing nova-compute service too.

My question is, can you cite any strong opinions for or against this idea? Or has anyone tried this previously? Forced downtime for both services is one concern for me, but this might be offset by the benefit of having compute and storage services so close to one another. Any other deal-breakers you can think of?
