use/meaning of the dns field on the networks table

When I've created a network, the DNS field contained 8.8.4.4. What is this? Then I've created another network and the DNS field contained NULL. Do we have to specify our DNS server on this field? or 8.8.4.4/NULL will be OK? Thanks!

If you are using flat mode: --flat_network_dns either in the flagfile or on the command-line to nova-manage
