The first question is how do you want to search the media files? e.g. finding similar images is far more complex than searching metadata

The typical approach is to use a pipeline to process the files and create/update the index document. This pipeline could be initiated by your website (and store the file in Swift) or by OpenStack Swift 'middleware' (WSGI filters around requests).

ElasticSearch has an attachment field type plugin that uses Apache Tika to parse the attachment - however the files need to be submitted to ES in Base64 encoding.

The choice of pipeline depends upon your requirements, this page on the Solr wiki may give you some pointers - for a recent project we implemented the pipeline following EIP patterns (e.g. Claim Check) using Spring Integration.
