Is there a way to get the instance out of the unshelding state if it gets stuck there for more than a day without completely deleting it?

$ nova unshelve S3-1 ERROR (Conflict): Cannot 'unshelve' instance 6149b9cb-6211-4ee9-8ad0-fc4d55b90d48 while it is in task_state unshelving (HTTP 409) (Request-ID: req-12e3c077-18b1-4fe2-bc18-8ead9a3593f5). i do not want to delete it because it is a snapshot image for other instances. I just wanted to find a solution of re-instating it back to active status

did you try resetting its state to active using nova reset-state --active command?

If its stuck in unshelving mode, there are several methods that you can try to get rid of that server/instance.

  • You can try sourcing the credentials file for devstack and then try running the command nova unshelve SERVERNAME
  • Try force deleting it using nova force-delete command (nova force-delete SERVERNAME), for more logs see (/var/log/nova/nova-compute.log) or in case of devstack the logs are running in screens and you can jump off to a particular screen to see the logs of a service.
  • One more thing you can try is trying resetting the state of the server to active and then deleting it, described below

nova reset-state --active Name-or-ID-of-server

nova delete Name-or-ID-of-server

  • The last resort will be to just clean it up from the database and also clean up all the references related to it.

Let me know if anything does not work out for you and we can further look into this, but I hope this will help !!
