HI, I followed the instructions on the openstack website below to install an openstack private cloud (rocky release) on 2 virtual servers inside virtualbox (1 controller node and 1 compute/storage node). It is working so now I have the openstack services: keystone, glance, nova, neutron, horizon and cinder: https://docs.openstack.org/install-guide/openstack-services.html#minimal-deployment-for-rocky (https://docs.openstack.org/install-gu...)

My question is if I want to add more services and increase the capacity of the private cloud, do I then just add more servers and install/configure controllers/computes nodes on there and then install the other services from the following website (under project installation guides) on those servers:

https://docs.openstack.org/rocky/install/ (https://docs.openstack.org/rocky/inst...)

Does anybody know if there are any good documentation that gives you ideas on how to design a good private openstack cloud (i.e. how many servers and what services should be installed on where etc)? If I would like to be able to create up to 100 instances, how many servers (i.e. controller, compute, storage nodes) do I need?

thanks for the ideas/help in advance!

Hi

// My question is if I want to add more services and increase the capacity of the private cloud, do I then just add more servers and install/configure controllers/computes nodes on there and then install the other services from the following website (under project installation guides) on those servers: // ~ans You have to add more compute to accumulate more instance but its all depends many factors.

Below are quick checks. Its all depends on your requirement, Purpose , application utilization and what you want to achieve for planing private cloud.

You have check Hardware Specification first. Disk , Memory and CPU , NIC's load support. Open Stack Variant You can over-commit Disk , Memory and CPU and accumulate as many as instance if you want to compromise with performance. you can follow over-commit doc for more details.

for standard solution go with 3 controller and N Compute ( depends on load increase compute count ). Assume you have physical server with 8 physical core 500 GB memory , 1 TB disk Hyperthreading enable you have total 32 Virtual vCPU's available with you.

Total: 32 virtual cpu , 500 GB Memory , 1 TB disk

Now you can create instance as many as you want to flavor (2cpu ,4cpu, 8cpu) until you exhaust CPU, RAM and disk you have in your bucket.

So can i also clarify, for each compute and/or controller node that I want to add, do i just install/configure the same services (e.g. nova, neutron, horizon, cinder etc on each of the controller node) on all the controller/compute nodes (each with an unique ip address of course)?

Thanks very much for the tips. I will definitely take a look at the over-commit doco.

Welcome To be more specific to you first query , Each services designated to respective nodes For Example Horizon service sits on all controller only , which is used for Dashboard.

Thanks for your prompt response. Based on this do you mean if we have 5 controller nodes, we will have to install horizon service on ALL FIVE controller nodes? Do you use any automation tool e.g. ansible etc to do that? Is there any good resources on how that can be done? thanks again !!

You can go ahead with ansible / pack-stack.

Below steps which I have followed for installation.
