The image from which you launched the instance determines how to log on. Usually, images have a user account named after the Linux distro, for example Ubuntu images configure a default user named ubuntu. Most images, however, disable password login, which means that you can't log on to the console without configuring the instance or modifying the image.

To add an ssh key to the instance, use the key-name option of the openstack server create command, or use the keypair tab in the GUI's instance launch dialog.
