What is the rationale behind nova flavors?

I wonder why flavors are used, instead of independent parameters for vCPU, RAM and disk. I can't find an explanation or a discussion leading to this choice.

EDIT: I've found https://ask.openstack.org/en/question/7205/why-does-openstack-use-flavor-in-apis/ (this question) where some explanation has been given. Is there more to know?

Hello, You can use extra properties on flavor => exemple Host-Agregate => cinder storage type etc..

This is my first day to work with open stack so my answer might be not very accurate. I think they use it as it could help the host to plan for their resources usage up in front. Also, because the host did calculate the price for each flavor.
