Hi!

I have Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS, installed Kolla-Ansible using virtualenv AIO:

(kolla) ubuntu@gmssspoaici01:~/kolla$ docker --version
Docker version 18.09.6, build 481bc77
(kolla) ubuntu@gmssspoaici01:~/kolla$

Server has 2 NICs, 10 GbE

I pass bootstrap and precheck phases but fails on deploy step:

FAILED - RETRYING: Waiting for nova-compute service up (2 retries left).

You did not mention the installation method of kolla-ansible. Please be aware that current PyPI-released version (7.1.1) does not support Stein deployments - it is for Rocky.

Please try using the latest from git stable/stein branch:

pip install git+https://opendev.org/openstack/kolla-ansible.git@stable/stein

Please remember to adapt the globals.yml and passwords.yml files as they differ from rocky.

We regularly test Ubuntu Bionic deployments with Stein. In case of problems, please attach globals.yml as well as inventory (if you make changes to it). For container failures, it is also valuable to attach the relevant logs from /var/log/kolla (available on the host) as well as docker logs you already attached.

Got you, I installed from pip, I downgraded to Rocky and now is working, but with CentOS. Rocky/Ubuntu also fails, mainly RabbitMQ container restarting and nova-compute complaining about RabbitMQ unreachable. The combination that worked for me is Rocky/CentOS, using pip.

Should I always use git installs for Ubuntu?

Nope, Ubuntu should work as well for the released version. If it fails, then please report a bug at https://bugs.launchpad.net/kolla-ansible (though try searching for similar issue first, it may have been reported and even addressed already).
