I'm installing Grizzly on Ubuntu 12.04 using the instructions at http://docs.openstack.org/grizzly/basic-install/apt/content/basic-install_controller.html. After installing the nova packages, the instructions say to restart the nova-novncproxy service. I get the error message "unrecognized service." Any idea why the service was not installed?

From documentation service should be installed, maybe you just missed it:

Install the Nova packages:

# apt-get install -y nova-api nova-cert nova-common nova-conductor \
    nova-scheduler python-nova python-novaclient nova-consoleauth novnc \
    nova-novncproxy
