I am new to OpenStack. Just wanted to understand the link between a running instance and its image which was used to create a VM. Can I delete image from glance after creating VMs? What would be the impact on running VM in future?

Glance doesn’t seem to care if an instance that has been launched from the image is running. See the API documentation. I tried this on Newton and was able to remove the image without complaint.

I can’t imagine (no pun intended) that instances access Glance when they are restarted. If the instance disk is a volume, they start from the volume. If it is ephemeral, they start from the local copy of the image on the compute host.

It depends on the storage backend. With ceph and ephemeral disks the instances are copy-on-write clones and are dependent on the base image. This question refers to this thread.
