I have created around 800 instances and when I gradually increased load from 800-1000 instances observed that few instances got deleted and not listing from nova list.

nova list | grep 2c264a5c-974e-4e81-9e0f-ed7221eb101a

Openstack version is newton

But strange part is database is showing this vm exists and is in active state

MariaDB [nova]> select uuid, deleted_at, vm_state, terminated_at , task_state, progress, shutdown_terminate, deleted from instances where uuid='2c264a5c-974e-4e81-9e0f-ed7221eb101a'; +--------------------------------------+------------+----------+---------------+------------+----------+--------------------+---------+ | uuid | deleted_at | vm_state | terminated_at | task_state | progress | shutdown_terminate | deleted | +--------------------------------------+------------+----------+---------------+------------+----------+--------------------+---------+ | 2c264a5c-974e-4e81-9e0f-ed7221eb101a | NULL | active | NULL | NULL | 0 | 0 | 0 | +--------------------------------------+------------+----------+---------------+------------+----------+--------------------+---------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec)

I also grep output from virsh on that particular compute node where vm resided and this vm exist and running

[root@redhat-com1 nova]# virsh list --state-running --uuid | grep 2c264a5c-974e-4e81-9e0f-ed7221eb101a 2c264a5c-974e-4e81-9e0f-ed7221eb101a

[root@redhat-com1 nova]# virsh dominfo 2c264a5c-974e-4e81-9e0f-ed7221eb101a Id: 237 Name: instance-0000093a UUID: 2c264a5c-974e-4e81-9e0f-ed7221eb101a OS Type: hvm State: running CPU(s): 1 CPU time: 125.9s Max memory: 524288 KiB Used memory: 524288 KiB Persistent: yes Autostart: disable Managed save: no Security model: none Security DOI: 0

any pointer on this issue would be appreciated.

It might be that nova list formats the output so that grep doesn't find the string. Did you try nova show or openstack server show? Did you try to list it as admin? Grep for a substring e.g, nova list | grep 2c2?

Thanks much Bernd Bausch. Nova show is showing me that particular vm which I was unable to see through nova list | grep 2c264a5c-974e-4e81-9e0f-ed7221eb101a.

I am almost certain you have a formatting problem of some sort. Perhaps nova list lists the instance, but the ID is not formatted as you expect it. Or nova list stops after 1000 instances or so?

Problem is , I am even not able to see particular instance entry from nova list command although can get its detail from nova show cmd. here I am not using grep cmd anywhere.

This happens almost 80 instances when I increased load to 1000 instances.

Your problem is probably explained in this bug description (which is not a bug after all).
