The Neutron router used to be centralized, so that all traffic through the router went through one particular node, the network node. To address this bottleneck, the distributed virtual router DVR was developed and released at Juno. It enables traffic to flow directly from/to the compute nodes instead of a dedicated network node.

See https://docs.openstack.org/ocata/netw.... Personally, I learned a lot about the DVR at assafmuller.com.
