How to backup instance on openstack

Is there any backup solution for instance hosted on openstack environment where I can restore it easily incase the instance is corrupted.

Basically, you are talking about snapshots. A regular nova snapshot of an instance uploads the image back to glance, so you can start other instances from that image or keep it as a backup. During the upload the running instance is paused until completion. Depending on your storage backend, there a other possibilities. I use Ceph where you can snapshot the VMs as copy-on-write clones and export them to your backup drive. This way the running instance is not affected at all, and you also don't have a new glance image everytime you snapshot your VM. But this is all manually set up, there is no automation provided for that.

Thanks for the reply. May i know how do you point snapshot to external drive. I more keen to understand the process behind this.
