What are the different approaches to upgrade openstack

Are there any mechnaisms that handle on-the-fly upgrades for openstack? I want to be able to update services without stopping or shutting them down.

The Ops guide has a chapter on upgrading: https://docs.openstack.org/ops-guide/.... Support for rolling upgrades with no or minimal downtime seems to be a hot development topic; see specs, e.g. http://specs.openstack.org/openstack/..., and release notes.
