Hello everyone.

I have deployed a virtual-box Ubuntu 16.04 Server VM on my main machine in order to run DevStack. This operation was a success and DevStack was fully operational (as far as I'm concerned).

When I tried to do the same thing on a physical machine with Ubuntu 16.04 Server OS, the installation was also a success but then I noticed that some of the operations weren't working properly.

For example every time I tried to launch a new instance (using Dashboard) I get this kind of errors:

Error: Failed to perform requested operation on instance "test", the instance has an error status: Please try again later [Error: Build of instance 3944d663-680a-480a-aa4c-8f88a629d269 aborted: Block Device Mapping is Invalid.] ,

whereas similar actions on the DevStack running on the VM Server work fine. Another example would be that if I create one and only instance on the physical server ( which of course results in error) I would get 1 active instance on the quota overview on the Overview tab. If I then proceed and delete this instance, the overview doesn't refresh and still indicates that there is one active instance (even though I deleted it).

Both ubuntu installations are of the same version (16.04) and are both considered as fresh installations with nothing more than the default software installed in them.

Any thoughts on what the problem may be?

I can only recommend to check the logs. In the case of the failed instance launch, you probably find a clue in the compute log /opt/stack/logs/n-cpu.log.
