I am using VMWare Player for running production servers. I want to move those running instances to openstack private cloud. How can i do that?

We have traditional way of managing virtulization, but now wants to move to openstack.

I use VMware converter for converting running instance to ovf format and upload it to Openstack using glance command. I tried container-format=bare, raw, vmdk and all those uploaded succesfully.

When i start the instance and logs into VNC console it says unable to boot.

Hi,

The OpenStack Image Catalogue and Delivery Service supports the following disk formats: raw, vhd, vmdk, vdi, iso, qcow2, aki, ari, ami.

To move the images from your existing setup, you will need to export them into one of those formats and upload them using the OpenStack Image Catalogue and Delivery Service.

You can use the VMWare vCenter Converter to perform the conversion, and then follow the instructions at http://docs.openstack.org/trunk/openstack-compute/install/apt/content/uploading-to-glance.html to complete the upload.

@jkumbhani If the answer provided by @fifieldt solves your initial question, you may want to post a new question to debug what's wrong with the uploaded images.

While converting instance i used pre-allocate data for disk type. This solved the issue and finally uploaded image on openstack. Thanks Tom for right pin point.

Another option worth checking out is the virt-v2v tool.
