I'm new to OpenStack, I've started by learning on DevStack. I have managed to create a custom ubuntu image...but keep on running into this problem.

I suppose you are running the latest DevStack, correct? How do you create the instance? How did you create the image? What does openstack image show <image name> tell you?

The error indicates a problem with the image or volume you are booting from, or perhaps with Glance or Cinder. If nothing conclusive comes from the above, grep for the instance ID in /opt/stack/logs/n-cpu.log (the Nova Compute log file) and look for block device mapping and BDM.
