I've setup openstack mitaka on ubuntu 14.04 machines using the openstack guide. At the end of horizon setup, I try http://controller/horizon but it takes 5 minutes to return internal server error. Also, during the setup, when I was making queries in setting up services the response was also very slow (~30 sec).

Not sure what logs I should look at, so if anyone has any idea where I should look for errors please tell me.

Start with the Apache logs for the Horizon problem, and the service-specific logs when a service responds slowly. E.g. /var/log/apache2 or /var/log/nova/nova-api.log for Nova. Configure debug logging if you see nothing. Also check for general bottlenecks, in particular memory.
