I had forgotten to add the Port Forwarding on the compute1 node on VirtualBox (Settings->Network->Adapter 2->Port Forwarding). Now nova-compute shows up in the list. Connectivity between controller and compute is fine.

I am still trying to solve the neutron/network node problem.

Update: the neutron neutron/network node connectivity problem was fixed by changing the external network setup in VirtualBox from NAT to bridgedBridged Interface, and updating the IPs in /etc/network/interfaces, config files and in the keystone database accordingly.
